Product Details

Sum and Substance Hosta features large, heart-shaped leaves that are chartreuse to golden-yellow in color. The leaves are heavily corrugated, giving them a distinctive and attractive texture. It is considered a large hosta variety, making it an excellent choice for providing substantial foliage and adding a bold presence to shade gardens.

  • Size: As the plant matures, the leaves may reach lengths of up to 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) and widths of 10-14 inches (25-35 cm). The overall height of the plant can vary, but it typically grows to be around 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) tall and can spread to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) in width.
  • Light: Hostas prefer partial to full shade, especially in hot climates. While they can tolerate some morning sun, they generally do best with dappled or indirect light. Avoid exposing them to intense afternoon sunlight, as this can scorch their leaves.
  • Soil: Hostas thrive in well-draining, humus-rich soil. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Adding organic matter, such as compost, to the soil can help improve its quality.
  • Watering: Hostas require regular watering, especially during the hot summer months. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. A layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
  • Fertilizer: Feed Sum and Substance Hosta with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring when new growth emerges. Additionally, applying a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around the base of the plant in early spring can provide additional nutrients.
  • Dividing: Over time, hostas can become crowded, leading to decreased vigor and smaller leaves. Dividing the plants every few years (usually in early spring or late summer) can rejuvenate them and promote healthier growth.
